In 1801, when a new king ascends the throne, a scholar Jeong Yak-Jeon who served the last king is exiled to remote Heuksando island during the Catholic Persecution for incorporating Christianity into his Confucian teachings. When he lands on the unknown island with fears, rather he is amazed by wonders of various sea creatures. There he meets Chang-dae, a young fisherman who is a huge admirer of Confucianism and has a wide knowledge about the sea. Fascinated by his knowledge, JEONG decideds to write a book about the sea and asks Chang-dae to help him write the book, in exchange for helping Chang-dae's study of Confucianism.
The unlikely relationship eventually results in the creation of the first encyclopedia on Korea’s indigenous fish and the underwater world. Based on Jeong’s life and Book of Fish, the film is a sweeping account of 19th century Korea and a tender portrait of an unlikely friendship. A gorgeously lensed homage to classical monochrome cinema this masterwork by Lee Joon-ik is infused with poetic humanism. Against the backdrop of history, this coming-of-age morality tale dazzles not only with its lush style, evocative of traditional ink painting, but also with its emotional, structural, and philosophical scope.
